Some USPS drivers aren't delivering mail, feds say. Instead they're stealing from Houston residents
USPS officials say employees stealing customers' mail isn't not new, nor is the crime on the rise. It's just one of those things they must keep their eye on.
The U.S. Attorney's Office works with the USPS Office of Inspector General and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to prosecute postal workers whom they believe have violated federal laws, especially ones accused of theft. The state ranks second behind California with 522 closed investigations by the inspector general, according to the agency's website.
The four mailmen were accused of working together for seven months to deliver parcels of marijuana on their routes, court records show. Special agents began tracking employees they believed were involved in the scheme on Dec. 4, 2019, after an audit of mail activity in ZIP code 77022, court documents state.A special agent with the inspector general's office noticed"an unusually high number of suspected narcotics parcels" on Garcia-Powell's route.
after they stole gift cards from parcels they'd been assigned to deliver, according to court records. Martinez swiped Walmart gift cards and authorities found Target gift cards and other stolen pieces of mail inside a cooler in the front seat of Curtis' personal vehicle, court records show.
