Questions of transparency, trust, and immigration enforcement took center stage at City Hall in an over eight-hour meeting. Last Thursday afternoon, over 175 people filed into the City Council Chambers, with concerned residents, business owners, and law enforcement professionals, all taking to the stand to voice their opinions on the recent uptick in ICE activity.
San Antonio City Council examined how the San Antonio Police Department works with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as members say residents want clarity on their rights and what local police are required to do. Tensions ran high at a public meeting in San Antonio as residents gathered to express their concerns over the involvement of Immigration and Customs Enforcement within the community. The chambers were filled to capacity, with a line extending out the door, as more than 170 people signed up to speak on the matter. Discussions focused on how the San Antonio Police Department collaborates with federal law enforcement agencies, including Homeland Security and ICE. Police Chief William McManus emphasized that SAPD does not enforce immigration law and is solely focused on public safety and protection. However, he noted that SAPD is legally required to provide resources if federal agencies request local assistance. Despite Chief McManus's assurances, his presentation did not sit well with the attendees. The majority of residents expressed their belief that San Antonio should denounce any cooperation with ICE agents. However, despite this, some of those who spoke did support the immigration agents. Outbursts between those in favor and in opposition of ICE cooperation with SAPD did lead to at least two 15 minute recesses to be called as tempers boiled over. Belinda, a community member, expressed her concerns, saying, "I feel like ICE is a rogue agency... we shouldn't have to live like that." In contrast, Grant Moody argued, "Law enforcement must be able to do their job safely and without interference." The council heard a presentation on the San Antonio Police Department's cooperation with federal agencies, including ICE, emphasizing that neither the city nor police can adopt laws interfering with federal immigration enforcement. Cheryl Gonzales urged for reassurance, stating, "We want to hear that you guys have our back and that we don't have to walk around scared." Conservative podcaster George Rodriguez defended ICE, suggesting, "If you condone... illegal immigration... you're going to get worse." Belinda countered, "If you have a heart, I mean, you need to stand up... it's affecting you." Moody encouraged respect for policies allowing officers to inquire about immigration status, emphasizing, "Public safety is a core responsibility of government... we must never put politics above public safety."While no action is expected to be taken immediately, the city council is being made acutely aware of the strong opposition from many San Antonio residents as tensions surrounding immigration enforcement continue to rise.SAN ANTONIO —From Kerr County Emergency Management William Thomas: Precipitation beginning to freeze on vehicles and exposed surfaces in Kerr County.Overpass atAs temperatures drop across Central Texas, one question keeps popping up online: Should you drip your faucets or let them stream? To settle the debate, we spokeSAN ANTONIO - EXTREME COLD WARNING is in effect from 9 p.m. through 9 a.m. on Tuesday for all of South Central Texas.
