Emergency-management officials advise residents to check in on their elderly or less-mobile relatives and to stay hydrated and cool through this weekend

The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management is urging residents to take precautions for their health and safety amid a blistering fall heat wave , while many residents hit Ocean Beach, one of the six public-library branches serving as cooling centers, or any of the pools the Recreation and Park Department opened to the public this week.

What do people often overlook, or what are the biggest mistakes people make during a heat wave? I hope that the vast majority of San Franciscans have a lot of common sense and know how to take care of themselves. I think the bigger issue is people who are vulnerable, especially the elderly or folks that have other physical ailments or issues, who don't have mobility, and aren't able to get outside.

I would also add that we have a very amazing, wonderful, lovely music festival, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass this weekend. And while it's going to cool off a little bit, it's not going to cool off significantly. We will not be in a heat advisory, but it's probably still going to be in the 80s. It’s interesting you bring up the festival, which is in Golden Gate Park, and it’s typically a much cooler part of The City and San Francisco has a lot of different microclimates. Are there certain parts of The City that are going to be hotter than others this week? If people can't afford to go to the movies or the mall and it's after library hours, what other resources are available? We are not doing other big cooling centers — we're not seeing the need for that at this point. We haven’t seen this sort of heat since 2017, 2016, when we had these horrible, long, extended, very hot days. And what we know is that people don't go to cooling centers.
