Here’s how a new downtown San Antonio stadium for the Missions baseball team could be financed.

The Missions owners’ first pitch to city officials for a new ballpark downtown boiled down to this: Please foot almost the entire bill. That’s how City Manager Erik Walsh on Wednesday recalled that first meeting. The minor-league ball club struck out. “I think we spent more time talking about it this morning with you guys than we did paying attention to that,” Walsh told the San Antonio Express-News . “It was pretty far out there.

“This deserves to be a landmark for families of San Antonio,” Smith told council members Wednesday afternoon. The ballpark is expected to open in time for Opening Day in April 2028, and the owners anticipate completing the first two stages of development in 2029. The third and fourth phases could generate another $425 million, for a total of $1 billion of new projects around the stadium by 2031. About 14% of the total stadium cost would come out of existing Houston Street TIRZ funds.
