Since 2002, 7-Eleven has celebrated the date by giving out free Slurpees of its frozen concoction.
by Omar Knedlik, a World War II veteran, in the late 1950s. He owned a Dairy Queen franchise but didn’t have a soda fountain, so he’d keep bottles in the freezer and serve them semi-frozen. Customers became fans, and Knedlik went on to invent the ICEE machine. By 1965, 7-Eleven was interested in his product and offered him a licensing deal. Decades later, Slurpees—named for the slurping sound they make when you drink them through a straw—are still a popular summer drink all over the country.
