But the good thing for couples such as Heather and John is: The crisis is only temporary, and relationship satisfaction increases after the age of 40 and stabilizes when people become older. The likely reason for this more positive trend is that older people often have the tendency to value and enjoy their immediate moments and their immediate social encounters more than younger people usually do.
Over the course of the relationship, however, couple members often invest less time and energy in managing their conflicts constructively, which may lead to lower satisfaction with the relationship. Again, this is not the best news for Heather and John, given that they have been together for 8 years and so their relationship satisfaction may still be declining. But also for this time metric, the findings show that the low point is only temporarily.
