“I think it was really, really important for Dionne to be on the show, because I think that the only really example that we see of drag queens in popular mainstream culture is through” Basit said in a recent interview. “That was one of the most, I think, real moments between Jonathan and I.... It definitely led to Jonathan to kind of see who I am in such a more in-depth way.”
“Isn’t that funny?” they added. “It took me fully glamorizing up and becoming this glamazon creature from another world for Jonathan to see how much, at my core, we are very compatible.”which premiered on Netflix this past Valentine’s Day, dedicated two of its first six debut episodes to queer contestants right off the bat.
“It went from something that happened once, to something that happened twice, to something that happened 10 times, 30 times,” LaPlante continued. “We were like, Oh my gosh. Then just as a storyteller in general, I think we got curious.” Given the very real issues the LGBTQ+ community faces, the presence of queer contestants on a few dating shows might seem trivial. But reality television has played a significant role in educating the public. LaPlante knows this better than most: Early in his career at MTV, he was aproduction assistant responsible for sorting mail from viewers. “I remember there was an entire binder that me and the other P.A.s were filling, of letters from random kids around the country,” he said.
