The Rangers’ opening day starter has a way with passing his knowledge down to the team’s younger arms.

Eovaldi has evolved from a guy who was, as Bochy described him, “a thrower,” to someone whose fastball still sits at 96 and can run up to three figures while commanding four other pitches. His exceptional splitter, Bochy said, draws particular interest. But even that isn’t what sets him apart on a mound.In a survey this winter by The Athletic of 20 MLB scouts, executives and analysts ranking the game’s top 50 starters, Eovaldi tied with Yu Darvish for 35th.
“You can get things pounded into your head,” he said, “and you need to know your mechanics. You need to have a feel for what you’re doing out there.”
