Pythons may hold the answer to another way to regrow our guts, a group of researchers led by the University of Texas at Arlington finds.
, scientists found that when pythons regrow their intestines after going without a meal for prolonged periods, they do so in a way similar to what happens in mammals and other animals during embryonic development and when a wound heals. What’s more, the phenomenon resembles what occurs in the intestines after a gastric bypass, suggesting humans and snakes have far more in common, biologically speaking, than meets the eye.
“ are a really cool model for how pretty much the same set of genes we have can accomplish really extreme bouts of regeneration,” Castoe said. “There’s some evidence that says BEST4+ cells could be tied to colorectal cancer tied to inflammation,” Foley said, adding these conditions essentially manipulate other cells, including BEST4+ cells, to aid in their growth with chemical signals., which Castoe said suggests the gut plays a significant role in metabolic diseases and that, aside from intestinal regeneration, studying python guts may afford better insights into new therapies for diabetes.
