When he first conceived the space-themed uniforms Purdue will wear Saturday against Maryland, Kyle Gergely simply wanted to honor the many Boilermaker astronauts like Neil Armstrong. Saturday's homecoming festivities, including an astronaut reunion, create a perfect situation to wear the new duds.
Purdue's football team will wear this all-white, astronaut-inspired uniform during Saturday's homecoming game against Maryland.Kyle Gergely didn’t realize when he conceived the space-themed uniform Purdue will wear Saturday that this year marks the 50th anniversary of Boilermaker astronaut Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the lunar surface.
Boliermakers take great pride the university’s many NASA connections, so they were over the moon about the design, as well. When the Purdue Team Shop introduced $40 miniature versions of the helmet on its site Monday, they sold out by late afternoon. They are“That was awesome,” Gergely said. “I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly they went.”
The helmet stripe features moonboot footprints, another tribute to Armstrong, and the numbers 2/25/64. The numbers signify the two Purdue astronauts who walked on the moon, the university’s 25 total astronauts and the 64 total space missions involving Boilermaker astronauts. The helmet and jersey patch will feature a modified version of the griffin on the Purdue University crest planting a Purdue flag on the moon.The shape of the patch on Purdue's homecoming uniform mimics the silhouette of the Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering.Sadler also subtly designed the shape of the patch to mimic the unique silhouette of Purdue’s Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering, located just down the block from Ross-Ade Stadium.
After clearing each of those hurdles, the mission was a go. Purdue was all-clear to wear one of the most unique alternate uniforms in recent memory – a design concept that randomly came into existence just in time for the most appropriate occasion.
