As fire burst into the cockpit, Earnhardt, wind knocked out of him, was motionless for a moment before climbing out and collapsing on the track surface. But in some bad crashes, it’s often wise to take things slowly.

“I did it for the FIA, when we were in Portugal. I was the dummy for the safety crew,” says Glickenhaus Hypercar driver Ryan Briscoe. “We did an extraction test in case I was unconscious in the car. And so I had the medical crew—I think it was the WEC medical crew—and they put me in a harness and then pulled me out of the car, and I basically played dead. And they put me on the stretcher.
