A recent study has proposed a new mechanism for the formation of primordial black holes that could provide answers about dark matter.

A new study by professor David Kaiser and Elba Alonso-Monsalve from MIT explains a scenario where primordial black holes formed in the early universe could have absorbed free quarks and gluons to acquire color charge.Ever since Swiss-American astronomer Fritz Zwicky coined the term ‘ dark matter ’ in 1933, the elusive and invisible component found liberally in the universe has been a subject of academic fascination among astrophysicists and scientists the world over.

Primordial black holes, on the other hand, are speculated to have formed in the early universe, fractions of a second after the Big Bang during high-density fluctuations. Gluons, which bind the quarks together, carry charge themselves. Quarks are never found in isolation as they bond together in a particular way to formGluons facilitate the interactions between quarks, ensuring that color charges are exchanged to maintain color neutrality. The color of quarks can change during these interactions, but gluons ensure that no two quarks within a hadron have the same color..

“Once we figured out that these black holes form in a quark-gluon plasma, the most important thing we had to figure out was, how much color charge is contained in the blob of matter that will end up in a primordial black hole?” said Alonso-Monsalve, in aResearchers found their models predict that color-charged black holes could have existed in the early universe when quarks and gluons existed freely.

One of the fundamental laws of science is conservation, which also applies to color charge. So, how does this work with regard to color-charged primordial black holes?
