Organizers say Pride programming must reflect, and stand with, the current protests against racism—that demanding justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless other black Americans is at the heart of what Pride symbolizes.
calendar has been rolled out, and it features several streamed events happening throughout June. “We have a number of events allowing folks to actually interact with each other, because that’s so important to our community,” says Amber Moyle, director of sponsorship and strategy for Pride Toronto. For its, from June 26 to June 28, the lineup features events focused on uplifting and amplifying black voices.
Overall, this year Pride Toronto wanted to focus on providing artists in the LGBTQ+ community with space and a platform. It will employ more than 180 artists to do so, all of whom the organization can pay thanks to sponsorships. “The goal definitely started with [supporting] the artists that we normally book and the businesses that are heavily reliant on the festival weekend,” says Moyle. The organization also launchedfeaturing products made by LGBTQ+ creators and brands.
Todd Sears, the founder and CEO of Out Leadership , says the program features 51 different events held over 30 days. “We have 21 nonprofit partners, so every single event will create visibility, as well as the opportunity for people to donate money to one of the LGBTQ+ nonprofits all around the world,” Sears says.
Other Proudly Resilient events this month will focus on informing viewers about the black LGBTQ experience. On June 27, it will host conversations with various stars who have played the iconic character Lola in. “As a black gay man, playing a drag queen is a challenge,” says Sears, who added that he will be “inviting as many organizations of color to use the Proudly Resilient platform to create additional conversations.
