At the time of his appointment, there was little information known about the Spanish coach as he had coached mainly only in Finland in his career, apart from coaching in the youth ranks in Spain. The 45-year-old tactician was, however, quick to show what he was all about when he led the Buccaneers to their MTN8 triumph in November.
While the Soweto giants have failed to win the DStv Premiership again this season after Mamelodi Sundowns defended the title yet again, Riveiro’s side still has a chance of finishing in the sought-after CAF Champions League spot should they end the season in second place on the log. Compared to last season, Bucs appear to be on the right track as they have already collected 12 victories and are on 40 points from 24 matches. Prior to that, when the team finished in third place behind Sundowns and AmaZulu respectively during the 2020/21 season, Bucs had 13 wins, 11 draws and were defeated in only six matches. Riveiro has emphasised on the importance of taking each match as it comes with the team’s sights set on finishing in second place.
To their credit, Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids did lead Bucs to the final of the Confederation Cup last season, despite losing to RS Berkane in the end, although the current campaign might be viewed as the most improved for the team.
