Phoenix Suns had two Thanksgiving events happening at the same time Wednesday evening at Footprint Center.
Down the arena hallway, Payne was enjoying himself with the kids as he’s partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters in the area to “encourage and recruit” mentors of color.
“That’s dope man, that’s dope,” Wainright said. “Seeing that means a lot not only to us, but also to the families he’s helping out.” Payne is serving as motivation for Wainright, who said he’s looking to do something in memory of his father, Calvin, who passed away last month. With his family involved, Payne served food, took pictures, signed autographs — and much more.
“It was fun,” Payne said. “I played video games with some of the kids and gave a little speech. We had a great time. Served some food, but just really here to show the kids some love, give them some confidence and just let them know anything is possible.” Payne even had a one-on-one talk with a kid who wants to play in the NFL about working hard to achieve your goalsLooking skyward at Payne, the kid replied, “Real bad.”“But it’s a lot of sacrifice,” Payne said. “It’s a ton of sacrifice. You’ve got practice, but guess what, you’re going to have extra practice because you’ve got bigger dreams.”
