Before 1935, no Australian had encountered a cane toad in their backyard. Today, Australians race to get the highest kills at the Great Cane Toad Bust—an yearly kill-a-thon aimed at reducing the ballooning population of cane toad s in the country.

While cane toads are native to South and Central America, they multiply exponentially everywhere they go. In fact, the traveling toads havea form of population control of their own, killing their tadpoles to keep a check on the numbers. While this behavior is not observed in the native toads, it is a prevalent practice among the toads living outside their native region.

The cane toads also compete fiercely for food, devouring insects, frogs and small reptiles at a sharp pace. And with female cane toads capable of laying up to 30,000 eggs at a time, their numbers multiplied at an almost unstoppable pace.Since 2021, local communities have been coming together to capture and cull cane toads during the Great Cane Toad Bust. Armed with nets, buckets and other creative tools, volunteers venture into the toad-infested land, picking them up by hand.
