From the February 1970 issue of HOT ROD: Producing well over 1 hp per cubic inch, Ron Hoettels' home-brewed 283-based four-cylinder beat the legendary Chevy V-8 engine at its own game.Racing history may very well record that Ron Hoettels of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, served almost singlehandedly to bend USAC midget racing around an important corner and give this colorful segment of the sport a revitalizing shot in the arm.
Naturally, this is why Hoettels went to all the effort to make a four-banger out of a V8 instead of pouring work into the Chevy II four-cylinder engine. A lifetime of work on the Chevy II head might never produce the horsepressure available from the V8 fuel-injection head. Hoettels ports and polishes the head, retains the stock valves and controls the action with Crane springs, retainers, roller rockers, pushrod and rev kits.
The crank is left stock save for a very slight shaving from the nose for clearance inside the gear drivetrain.Chevrolet 327 connecting rod has thin semicircles of steel silver-soldered to one edge to ensure proper side clearance on crank journal. The design of the front drive assembly is nothing short of ingenious. The nose of the camshaft is doweled with three pins. The cam gear contains six holes which will mate with the three pins upon rotation. These pins and holes and 40 teeth on the gear may be juggled to advance or retard the camshaft in V/2-degree increments. All gears in the front cover are straight-cut, ten-pitch, 20-degree pressure angle units.
