Roads were closed off with a huge cordon put in place after the chemical leak
Hospitals on alert, concerns for the health of exposed local residents and businesses locked down were sparked due to a 'faulty valve' at a chemical plant in Trafford.
However exposure can cause shortness of breath and coughing to anyone who comes into contact with it. High exposure can cause fluid to build up in the lungs, a condition known as pulmonary edema. Amid the chaos, hospitals across Greater Manchester were understood to have been put into major incident response readiness in reaction to the chemical leak. The hospitals were put on the major incident alert footing, alongside the other emergency services. This was stood down just after 2pm once ambulance crews were able to assess people working at the Lanxess site.
Pictures taken from the dramatic scene showed swathes of ambulances and police cars lining Tenax Road after the leak, as traffic was diverted from the area throughout the afternoon. It is understood that the chemical leak was caused by a faulty valve on a tanker. Lanxess is a specialty chemical company that employs 13,100 people across 32 countries, producing fire retardant materials at their Trafford Park site. Some of these processes involve the suspected leaked phosphorus oxychloride.
