As the world's eyes turn to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games, Gabby Thomas is ready to electrify the track again. The Harvard-educated epidemiologist and world-class sprinter is not just not set on seizing gold; she's racing to redefine the landscape of women's track and field.
But Thomas's ambitions extend far beyond the Olympic podium. Just weeks after the Games, on September 26th, she will headline Athlos - a groundbreaking women's-only track meet in New York City.
Thomas is acutely aware of track and field's perennial challenge: maintaining momentum beyond the Olympic cycle. She points out that visibility and accessibility are significant hurdles, with many high-profile meets moving behind paywalls or off major networks in non-Olympic years. This shift makes it increasingly difficult for fans to follow the sport's premier events, including the Diamond League and World Championships, potentially stifling audience engagement growth.
"I'm seeing a lot more investment in track and field right now," Thomas noted."A major issue with track and field currently is accessibility. People are excited to watch us run and support us during the Olympics every four years. We have competitions annually, including world championships in our off years, but it's hard for people to access these events or know what's going on.
