In Anna Kendrick's new holiday movie, it's the week before Christmas and Santa is dead. 😲
9:05 AM PST, November 11, 2019The particulars of the late, great Kris Kringle's demise aren't of immediate importance, especially as the North Pole has a more pressing concern to deal with: His eldest son, Nick, the would-be Santa successor, is AWOL. With the big night rapidly approaching, the elder elves have gathered the entire North Pole at town hall to sort out the mess.
"Anna was the first person that we went to," Todd says of casting Kendrick."Thankfully, she said yes, because she's so perfect in it. Anna is so charming and adorable and kind of elfish. North Pole-ish in her own way.", meanwhile, plays Nick. As the eldest son of Santa, he is in training to inherit the moniker and its responsibilities, only to discover that he's not exactly qualified to do so. He can't tell naughty from nice, for example.
"When the movie starts, Santa has sadly passed some months before. It's a Disney movie, so you have to kill a parent, right?" Todd laughs. MacLaine is decked out Arizona glam -- a cowboy hat adorned with desert flowers, dangly silver earrings and strings of turquoise jewelry -- as Polly and Noelle's search-and-rescue mission takes them to Phoenix, where Nick has reinvented himself as a yoga instructor.

The Ridiculous Twist of Last Christmas Makes It Worth Enduring This MessThere are people who claim, not unconvincingly, that Wham!’s perennial earworm “Last Christmas” is only nominally a Christmas song (Lifehacker’s Nick Douglas called it the Die Hard of Christmas songs in a 2017 post). I’d argue that the insistent sleighbells and theme of manipulating people through gift-giving is, in fact, very pertinent to the holiday, but otherwise, I can concede that it is very much a love song whose yuletide framework could be interpreted as circumstantial. It is equally appropriate and regrettable that Paul Feig’s Last Christmas, which was named after the song, is barely a Christmas movie. Yes, it takes place at Christmastime, it’s largely set in a Christmas store, and its protagonist learns a remedial lesson about the soul-warming effect of helping others, but that’s all backdrop to a rather chaste and saccharine love story with superficial subplots concerning Brexit and queer coming out that could take place at any time of year and still go down like curdled eggnog.
