Over decades, hydroxyapatite toothpaste has gained momentum in Asia and Europe.

During the 1960s, a researcher at NASA was working on growing crystals for electronics. While conducting experiments, he noticed a striking resemblance between how the crystals were forming and the process of crystal formation in teeth and bones. Impressed by this similarity, he patented a method for growing hydroxyapatite crystals that could repair damaged teeth.research.

Rubin’s patented technique involved converting a precursor mineral to hydroxyapatite, which gives teeth their strength directly on damaged tooth surfaces. However, the path from concept to product would take Rubin halfway around the world. This idea was an early example of biomimetics, the science of imitating nature to solve biological problems. Using the natural ingredients and process of tooth formation, Rubin’s method offered a way to restore teeth without using artificial materials. The patent was granted in 1972, but by then, the Electronics Research Center had closed, and Rubin had moved to NASA Headquarters in Washington to manage remote sensing and data acquisition programs, as per the, Rubin’s work caught his eye.
