As Democrats gather for their national convention in Chicago this week, all of the party’s leading lights—former presidents, ambitious senators, rising stars, and the ticket itself—will await their speaking time slots, wondering how a rousing moment could change the trajectory of the race and the course of their own careers. One figure, though—who’s never been a great orator—will give a speech on Wednesday, a few slots ahead of Tim Walz.
Pelosi would deny the details of her handiwork—she didn’t place a single call!—though not the narrative that she played a decisive role in pushing Biden out.. The overall arc of the 24 days between Biden’s disastrous June debate and his announcement that he’d exit the race made mea line Pelosi told a group of reporters at a roundtable in 2019, just after she’d forced then-President Donald Trump into caving on a lengthy government shutdown.
Pelosi’s signature vote-gathering feat was passage of the Affordable Care Act in March 2010. This was an unpopular bill at the time; anger about it had fuming crowds outside the Capitol spitting on members as they made their way in to vote. Many members knew that they would be signing their resignation letters from Congress by voting for it. These were not easy conditions for mustering majority support.
