In February 2012, Cairo giants Al Ahly travelled to Port Said for their league clash against Al-Masry.Brazilian journeyman Fábio Júnior gave the visitors an early lead, but three late goals, including one from Burkina Faso international Abdoulaye Cissé, enabled the home side to turn things around for a 3-1 win.
What followed were several years of football being played behind closed doors, a lifting of that rule which led to catastrophic results, which in turn caused officials to again order closed-door matches. What made Egypt’s position in Africa at the time remarkable was that they had achieved their continental success mainly with players who were contracted to Egyptian clubs.
All of that, of course, changed when officials in effect forced domestic football to ground to a halt or ordered matches to be played behind doors.
