Mlouye creative director Meb Rure discusses the challenges and successes they’ve had while building up their business from home in Istanbul.

Primary-colored mules with pleated heels recall the look of the’s signature lantern bag, and the four-piece collection of ready-to-wear features a leather patchwork mini dress and an olive green boilersuit.

Why launch now when so many independent businesses are struggling to stay afloat and are uncertain about how to progress into an unknown future? For Rure, who is based in Istanbul, it was about listening to her customers. “We started working on the expansion two years ago,” she says. “The new categories were initially supposed to launch in June, but since the outbreak of coronavirus we decided not to wait.

Rure and her team have been working from home for the last six weeks, despite only a partial lockdown order in Turkey. The fulfillment group is still in the warehouse, but they’ve minimized the number of employees on site at a given time and are following the recommended precautions for cleaning, screening, and hygiene. “Our primary focus is the health and safety of our employees and their families,” Rure notes.

Of course, the challenges are very present. Mlouye is made between Italy and Turkey, so production has significantly slowed down or even stopped. But pre-orders for the shoes are rolling in and, according to online sales numbers, demand for the bags has not declined . And so, Rure continues to build with a positive yet realistic point-of-view.
