When entering a “real world” space, unconscious reflexes kick in. We turn on the lights, set up the table, or subtly move all furniture 2 inches to the left and see if anyone notices. But the point is that there are things we do when we enter a real room literally without even thinking about it.

We do not yet have these reflexes in the virtual world, and so we need to consciously build them. As a team lead, do you enable waiting rooms for a seamless entrance experience, or do you want people to trickle in and recreate some of the casual conversation that has been lost to the virtual world? Do you want to go a step further and open meeting rooms ten minutes early just in case people want to pop in early to chat? Is your background set up? If your computer isn’t compatible with Zoom backgrounds , what is in your real-life background? Where is your light source? While these questions may seem overwhelming, they are tiny details that create a different experience, and we need to make them our virtual reflexes.getty: without the variety of our normal days, it’s increasingly difficult to recall events. Meetings, whether off- or on-site, helped break up the monotony of our work days, giving us movement and a change of scenery. It is arguably an additional responsibility of managers to recreate this sense of getting away, which will then have benefits for recall, and thus productivity. Many offices name their conference rooms; similarly, have “kitchen” meetings where everyone dials in from their kitchen. Repeat with every room but the bathroom. Encourage walking meetings, or front porch/yard meetings - or give meetings themes, like Wigs ‘N Onesies Wednesday. Another way to recreate that sense of getting away is to deliver it.
