Chris Young has said you can never have enough pitching, but you’ve got to at least try to have enough first.
Texas Rangers executive vice president & general manager Chris Young watches during the first Spring Training workout for pitchers and catchers at the team's training facility on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024, in Surprise, Ariz.Only yesterday, it seems like, Adolis Garcia pulled Minute Maid Park down upon the Philistines and Corey Seager took a walk on the wild side and Josh Sborz spiked his glove and the Rangers found the keys to the Promised Land in Bruce Bochy’s back pocket.
But, like a lot of lefties, he may be reaching his prime late. His WHIP has dwindled from 1.231 with the Yankees to 1.191 with the Cardinals to 1.094 with the Rangers. If the Rangers have doubts about Montgomery’s ability to repeat what he did for their collective psyche, that’s one thing. If it’s just money, let me remind the owner this isn’t Kansas City.
Just the same, it’s a little embarrassing when Josh Hader, the closer who signed with the Astros, says he got the impression the Texas team that won the World Series is worried about its longtime TV revenues. Even if those fears are well-founded, it leaves the impression Davis is on a fixed income. The man just won the franchise’s first World Series. Merchandise sales will jump. Attendance will boom. The Rangers need to build the kind of equity that the Astros have.
Here’s the deal about acquiring pitching: The Rangers don’t necessarily need to spend big. Dylan Cease, 28, the Cy Young runner-up two years ago, is apparently on the market again. No, he wasn’t good last year, but neither were the White Sox. On a bad team, Cease posted more than 200 strikeouts for the third year in a row as well as the lowest home run rate of his career.Over the last three seasons, he’s also started 32, 32 and 33 games.
