How long will Mitchell Trubisky be the Steelers’ starting QB? When could Kenny Pickett get his shot? FrontOffice33 | HereWeGo
The Steelers anointing Trubisky as their starter indicates they’ll provide the former North Carolina standout with an honest chance to prove he’s the correct man to usher their offense forward. Trubisky and the Steelers should remain competitive enough throughout the early portion of the season. Contests against the New England Patriots, New York Jets, and a Deshaun Watson-less Cleveland Browns give the Steelers a fair opportunity to start their season 2-2, at worst.
Should Trubisky manage to successfully navigate the Steelers through that negative stretch, Pickett would continue to prepare for an eventual opportunity from the sidelines. But it’s plausible to believe the Steelers will be rightful underdogs throughout those four contests. The Steelers could fall behind the competition in a tight-knit AFC North division. The bye week mercilessly arrives in Week 9.
The Steelers will face high-quality defenses coming out of the bye, including the aforementioned Saints, Bengals, and Indianapolis Colts. The Steelers will have to choose their battles wisely. This stretch is slightly more manageable than October’s. These contests could present Pickett with opportunities to continue acclimating prior to more manageable showdowns against the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers in December.
