Perspective: Graham’s MAGA survival shows Trump’s GOP prizes personal authorization over ideological purity, sparing useful heretics.
President Donald Trump’s endorsement Graham is a four-term incumbent seeking a fifth term, a Senate institutionalist, and an Iran hawk whose foreign-policy instincts cut against the “America First” ideology.
There’s little appearing to stand in the way of another victory, even if he is forced into his first-ever runoff. It’s a markedly different story from John Cornyn’s, another Grahamesque figure in the Senate. Cornyn not only failed to secure Trump’s endorsement, but also the backing of Texas Republicans to keep his seat in the Lone Star State. This inversion reveals the truth here.
Graham did not discover perfect ideological purity under MAGA’s America First umbrella. He discovered the Trump indulgence. There’s a simple question in South Carolina: Where’s Graham’s Ken Paxton? Texas demonstrated the model of a MAGA purge when Paxton defeated four-term Cornyn in the May 26 Republican Senate runoff after an Cornyn was no liberal Republican; he was a reliably conservative vote in the Senate for years.
But his recent departures from MAGA’s worldview include voting for Ukraine aid and the bipartisan gun safety bill passed after the 2022 Uvalde school shooting. More damagingly in the eyes of Trump, Cornyn was seen as insufficiently loyal during the most difficult times, particularly between the two terms, when the president was vying for the candidacy again amid a wave of legal troubles.
He had statewide office, three statewide wins, a record of legal combat against Democratic administrations, and a history of scandal that many supporters folded into a persecution narrative after his Moreover, Paxton outflanked Cornyn on issues Trump saw as vital, including supporting the SAVE America Act to reform federal voting rules—and nuking the filibuster rule if necessary. Trump’s endorsement probably helped Paxton’s margin, but may not have decided the race.
Polling had Paxton pulling away before Trump intervened, and Cornyn’s runoff turnout collapsed by more thanAnd he remains closely identified with the muscular foreign policy that many America First conservatives say they distrust after decades of foreign adventurism, such as Afghanistan and Iraq. But while the MAGA revolt over Iran is real, it sits mostly at the top of the movement.

He has defended Trump, helped him in Senate fights, retained state support, and used his decades of Washington experience in ways a less seasoned insurgent might not be able to pull off.
Moreover, Graham not only has Trump’s endorsement, but South Carolina’s leading Republicans Tim Scott and Henry McMaster are set toBut that defense of Graham strengthens the case that he has found MAGA’s only loophole for Republicans. In Trump’s GOP, effectiveness is measured against service to Trump’s project, Trump’s fights, and Trump’s standing. Cornyn’s conservatism could not save him because Paxton offered a more coherent claim to loyalty, and a promise that it would endure for Trump in future.
The MAGA movement has substantive policy content and a genuine ideology that drives it forward. Its voters are not mere empty vessels waiting for instructions from above. But the South Carolina-Texas contrast shows something narrower and more important. When doctrine collides with Trump’s authorization, his authorization usually wins.
The label “America First” still mobilizes resentment, money, and media attention. But it is very hard for a candidate to authenticate their claim to that label once Trump calls it a counterfeit badge on them. MAGA did not spare Lindsey Graham because it forgot what he was. It spared him because Trump remembered what he was useful for.
