Ohio State football made ball security a priority ahead of Saturday's game against Penn State.

Penn State sacks the quarterback at a higher rate than any team in the country except Texas A&M. It utilizes— Chop Robinson, Adisa Isaac and Dani Dennis-Sutton — who combine to average nine pressures per game. On third down, the Nittany Lions may put all three on the field together. Wonderlikely will not rely solely on that front four for pressure. McCord should fully expect Penn State to come after him and his vulnerable offensive line to force mistakes and attempt to create turnovers.

And he does, which is why — one week after flirting with a turnover problem — McCord has protection on his mind. Ohio State coach Ryan Day clearly stated taking care of the ball as a major factor in the preseason quarterback competition. That helped McCord win the job, and for the most part, he has lived up to that expectation.

On a couple of those occasions, things got hairy when McCord tried to keep a play alive. All part of the real-time adjustments being made in one’s first year as a starter. The Boilermakers blitzed on 73.3% of McCord’s drop-backs, per PFF. He said Penn State’s pressure may be just as relentless but comes in a different form.
