Kyle McCord showed in Ohio State's win over Notre Dame how hard it is to rattle him. But where does that special trait come from?
C.J. Stroud wore his heart on his sleeve both in his play and how he often handled the media. It wasn’t a bad thing as he developed into a two-time Heisman Trophy finalist and No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft. But it meant we always knew exactly what he was thinking or how he was feeling. He couldn’t hide his emotions and wouldn’t have done so even if he tried.
“That’s definitely a good quality of mine,’ McCord said. “If you’re gonna play quarterback at a high level and be in situations like that it’s extremely important to be calm, collected and focus on the task at hand. That trait is part of his natural makeup, part of his preparation, and part of his off-the-field development which meant enlisting the help of a sports psychologist. The mental health of athletes has become a bigger talking point in recent years. The use of sports psychologists has become as normal for athletes as any other form of physical treatment after a game.
Those three crucial things are what drive the first real clue the public got about what Ryan Day saw in McCord back in 2019 when he committed. They were what allowed him to win the starting job in 2023 and helped him walk away from his first big stage with a win.
