These instincts will be on full display in the first debate this week, when Harris and Trump each vie for America’s conscious and unconscious support. Tens of millions of Americans will be watching to see if Harris can maintain the positive regard she has generated, or whether she will become just another Democrat steamrolled under the Trump juggernaut. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
Trump has capitalized on this sense of isolation by mobilizing in his followers the most primitive psychological beliefs about loss and loneliness: what Freud called the “,” the unconscious belief that the parents’ love and attention, once exclusively the child’s, has been unjustly taken away and given to a preferred sibling. In the Trumpian archetype, the preferred sibling is the newborn,into what had been an ideal family constellation.
