Webb's high-resolution instruments uncover distant objects, enabling studies of early stars, galaxies, and habitable exoplanets.

Webb’s high-resolution instruments reveal objects too distant for past missions, enabling studies of early stars, galaxies, and potentially habitable exoplanets. was finally launched into space. It was well worth the wait for astronomers, astrophysicists, cosmologists, engineers, and space enthusiasts. This next-generation space telescope is the largest, most complicated ever deployed, and the most sensitive infrared observatory ever built.

Thanks to Webb’s advanced resolution and IR instruments, the earliest galaxies that existed during “Cosmic Dawn” are now being observed. This is similar to what astronomers have observed today with Quasars, the bright central regions of galaxies with SMBHs that temporarily outshine the rest of the galaxy. If this were the case, the light emitted by the gas would create the illusion of many more stars than Webb’s observations suggest.suggests that the Universe was much denser during this period, which prevented early stars from pushing gas out during formation.

“Also, many early galaxies possess active supermassive black holes, which can temporarily “brightness enhance” these galaxies due to non-stellar activity. Only by accounting for all four of these factors can we see that, no, cosmology isn’t broken, and JWST’s copious numbers of bright, early galaxies didn’t break it. They simply compelled us to look deeper to understand what it is, exactly, that we were seeing and why.
