An engineer who left the the south-east Asian country of Myanmar as a child is now spear-heading efforts to provide solar power to hospitals in remote areas there.solar energy access to rural healthcare facilities in northern Myanmar

"After nearly 3 months of operation, we saw that the solar power has served as the primary source of power for the hospital since installation, leaving the generators as backup emergency power," he says, adding that the logistics challenges posed from ongoing armed conflicts means access to diesel has been sparse or exorbitantly costly.

"My family received two hours of electricity per week when I was growing up in Kachin; my upbringing in a rural off-grid community exposed me to challenges, experiences, and localized knowledge that can not be taught or researched," he says,"My childhood in Myanmar and my experience as an immigrant has shaped my ambitions to give back to marginalized communities like mine who are often forgotten or left behind.

Hein explains that when he meets leaders from other indigenous communities or communities from the Global South, there’s a feeling of solidarity and he can see the care, compassion, and determination they bring to their work to improve their communities.
