, how does Van Tulleken believe we can break the cycle of addiction? Of course, not all of us are totally addicted to all UPFs, but there is likely a range of foods that we find difficult to resist. How do we break this reward system which scientists are beginning to understand more about?“What I find interesting, and points to its addictive quality,” says Van Tullecken, “is that knowing rationally that UPF is bad for us doesn’t make it less desirable.

“I think part of my sadness was a direct effect of UPF on the brain, but also the sleeplessness that the salty food was giving me, as I was having to drink so much water and get up in the night to pee, the fact that I got constipation and piles. I felt inflamed and lethargic. All of the health issues, and my deep sadness, only stopped when I stopped the UPF diet.”

“I was still addicted to those behaviours. But when the food actually turned up, I’m ashamed to say that I twice threw away an entire takeaway. The wanting and the liking being separate is very intriguing to me.”Yet, in the end, Van Tulleken finally broke the cycle of UPF addiction by going cold turkey.
