Reframe how you think about yourself.

Before I entered the corporate world, I was an actor. Over the course of my entire five-year acting career, I made a total of about $500. It wasn’t that I was exceptionally terrible at it. I trained and worked with some talented people. It’s just the cold reality of the biz — oversaturated and fraught with rejection, financial insecurity, unemployment, and.

Imagine then the level of self-doubt when, a year later, at the age of 26, I somehow found myself in an entry-level role at a leading advertising agency. Like a character study, I did all I could to look and feel the part. I bought ridiculously fancy clothes, styled my hair to look clean cut , and learned the bureaucratic language of corporate jargon. It was overwhelming.

At first, I had to locate the source of my insecurity. At its core, I found that I had become convinced by the idea that I needed to have a specific background, go to certain colleges or trainings, and have access to certain networks or experiences — namely prestigious ones — to validate me as business practitioner. My insecurity grew not from what little value I placed on my existing skillset, but from the absence of the experience I thought I needed.

I started defining my role as a junior advertising executive as something bigger than what it was. Bigger than what it could be. Crucially, I reframed it in language that was grounded in the unique experiences, passions, and talent that I knew in myself to be true.
