Hyperspace is an essential function of space travel in Star Wars, but how does this faster-than-light form of transportation actually work?
Interstellar travel would be impossible in the Star Wars franchise without hyperspace, though what exactly hyperspace is and how it works is something of a mystery. In both the canon and Legends continuities, the concept of hyperspace is explored, with its history, mechanics, and even its connection to the Force itself delved into.
Starships traveling through hyperspace normally cannot be tracked and have extreme difficulty communicating, even with other vessels in hyperspace. The latter is remedied by special hyperspace transceivers, which appear in canon’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and several Legends novels. In Legends, tracking a ship through hyperspace requires a homing beacon, or a pursuer would have to guess where a vessel is headed based on its trajectory.
While hyperspace travel intrinsically poses risks to spacers, canon and Legends also include a form of psychosis that can occur from prolonged exposure to the hyperspace tunnel effect. In Legends, this is referred to as “hyper-rapture,” while in canon it is called “lightspeed psychosis,” and any being who stares into the void of hyperspace for too long is at risk of acquiring this madness.
