How hot can it get before the human body fails? The answer relies on something you probably have ever heard of: wet-bulb temperature.

Over the past several years, extreme heat has frequently made the headlines. According to NOAA ’s National Centers for Environmental Information, 2023 was the hottest year on record globally, and some of the top 10 hottest years ever have come during the past decade. As the Earth continues to warm, how hot is too hot? Is there a certain point where temperatures become too high for humans to be able to survive? It’s not a question that can simply be answered with a specific temperature.

But what exactly is that threshold? Previous studies have suggested that a wet-bulb temp of 95 degrees or higher is the critical point at which even young, healthy adults could experience hyperthermia or organ failure. However, that study from 2010 was based on theory and modeling, not real data from human responses. In 2022, Penn State University conducted a study to see how actual humans reacted to extreme heat and humidity. The study, known as H.E.A.T.
