Employing generative AI can be productive and should be encouraged, but it may be denying people opportunities for entry-level learning and development, which is a crucial start to their careers., Mollick observed that “a different form of intelligence” is now joining the workforce. When it comes to specific tasks, AI functions well, usually within the 80th-percentile range, Mollick points out. “The standard I tend to use is BAH — best available human.
The catch is that AI is seen as performing more effectively than interns and may even be usurping the vital low-level tasks that people need to understand as they advance up the career ladder. “I am very worried about what happens once my students graduate.,” he illustrates. “I teach people how to be good generalists. Then they go and work for a company and learn from an apprenticeship system about how to actually work for that company.
What worries Mollick is with AI, “the apprenticeships are what get removed first. In most cases, AI is already better than most of your interns. I wouldn’t be surprised if in most fields, it doesn’t outperform most interns. The question is, are you still going to train people in the same way when the deal — I help train you, you do work — is broken? If I get the work down another way, am I still training people? We’re going to have to rethink about how formal training operates in organizations.
With the existing workforce, organizations are sending mixed messages that both encourage and discourage use of generative AI. To date, most guidelines on AI use within organizations are very vague, and tends toward discouraging AI use, he pointed out. “It tends to be things like, ‘use it for good measures, but if you use it for bad measures, you won’t get approval, you'll be in trouble.’ So what happens is, everybody still uses AI, they just don’t tell you about it.
The best approach is to model success with actual use, he said. “I’ve seen organizations where people were giving out $10-thousand-dollar prizes every week to whoever could figure out the best way to automate part of their job with AI. C-level executives should learn how to use AI and then model that behavior.”
