You might think it's a tacky faux-pas, but the French Manicure is sweeping Hollywood, Instagram and your local nail salon. And it looks different than it did in the 2000s. How to master it.
to manicures, most everyone is fluent in French. Traditionally defined as a neutral nail edged in white, the French manicure has fallen in and out of fashion since its 1970s inception. Until lately it had been definitively out, associated with 2000s-era high-school proms and tawdry mall culture. But like low-rise jeans and other aughts styles, the French has returned—though it might look a bit different now than it did on “The Hills.
One needn’t scroll too deeply on social media to find countless iterations. On Instagram, Lizzo has flaunted lilac and pink glitter-tipped talons. Kourtney Kardashian wore black, aubergine and red tips at this year’s Oscars, Grammys and her May nuptials, respectively.
Over the decades, French fans have included Cher, Paula Abdul and Lil’ Kim but the look’s popularity transcends star power. “It was a ‘mass-pirational’ style in that it wasn’t just the mark of an elite few,” said Brooklyn fashion historian Suzanne E. Shapiro, author of “Nails: The Story of the Modern Manicure.” She attributes this to polish’s accessible price and the look’s versatility. It also cut salon-junkies’ costs: The flesh-colored base eliminated the need for constant pro touch-ups.
“It’s a great way to be funky and classic at the same time,” said Alex Esposito Burton, 32, a copywriter in Kansas City, Mo. She went viral on TikTok after posting the “bridal blue” French she created for her sister’s surprise engagement in June. The style was a colorful interpretation of the classic French the siblings’ mother wore down the aisle in 1989. The post has racked up over 16 million views.
