Three Greater Manchester MPs voted to end the 'cruel' policy

Calls for a controversial policy that has been branded 'cruel' by child poverty campaigners were voted down last night .

Some MPs in Greater Manchester have called for the benefit cap, which was introduced by the Conservatives in 2017, to be scrapped. This includes two Labour MPs - one of whom has now been suspended from the party for rebelling in the vote on Tuesday .Salford MP Rebecca Long-Bailey was one of seven Labour MPs who voted for an SNP amendment which called for the two-child limit to be abolished immediately.

It comes after ministers met with leading charities and campaigners to discuss plans for an 'ambitious' child poverty strategy last week. The government said a new taskforce will explore how it can use 'all the available levers' to tackle child poverty across the UK. Several MPs tabled amendments to the King's Speech last week calling for the controversial policy to be scrapped. This includes one which has been signed by several Labour MPs, with the SNP, the Green Party and independent MPs tabling their own amendments.
