FROM the silky smoothness of her vocals and her calm, composed demeanour, no one would ever guess the pain and heartache that lurked beneath Ella Fitzgerald's extraordinary talent. While the troubles of her great rival Billie Holliday were evident in every performance, Ella betrayed nothing of her shockingly difficult start in life.
According to one of the documentary's contributors, R&B singer Patti Austin, Ella was levelheaded enough not to go off the rails.
