New head coach Steven Pearl will now have to keep the roster together after taking over the job
Bruce Pearl’s retirement also means Auburn players now have a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal, as is permitted whenever there is a head coaching change. That’s significant as Auburn will start the regular season in just over a month on Nov.
3. In the worst-case scenario, Auburn’s roster could be depleted by the time the season starts with limited options to rebuild, but the in-house promotion could limit some of that immediate turnover. Steven Pearl has been on the Auburn basketball staff since Bruce arrived since 2014 and has been the associate head coach since August of 2023. The majority of Auburn’s 2025-2026 roster was brought in this past offseason and recruited heavily by Steven Pearl. During the Final Four in April, Pearl said he was involved with recruiting players in the transfer portal while the team was still preparing for games. “It’s just trying to find time between film, practice and stuff like that to do zooms with these guys,” Pearl said at the time. “Coach is trying to fit as much time as he can in the game planning, and we’re trying to pull him away for a little bit of time each day to try and get in front of these guys.” With Pearl being involved in the recruitment of most of the players on Auburn’s current roster, there’s reason to believe the Tigers can hold onto much of its current roster. According to the press release announcing Pearl’s promotion, he had already taken the lead in the transfer portal recruiting over the past few years. That included landing players such as Wendell Green Jr., Walker Kessler, Johni Broome, Denver Jones and Miles Kelly. While none of those players remain on the current roster, it speaks to his recruiting pedigree. Hopefully for Auburn, it will translate to his recruiting ability as a head coach. One thing that’s works in Auburn’s favor during the current transfer portal window for its players is the fact that there aren’t many teams that still have spots left to sign players. Any Auburn players who considers entering the portal now would have to take that into consideration. For many of them, staying would be their best chance to play this season. After this season, Pearl and the staff will once again be faced with the task to keep the team together after the coaching change. But if the season goes well, that could take care of itself.
