How are hurricanes named: Alphabetical naming system explained

Hurricane season begins June 1 and as it approaches, residents in vulnerable locations must anticipate the arrival of these named, but uninvited, visitors.Before a hurricane is born it starts out as a tropical storm, and the storms tracked by the National Hurricane Center are given names when they reach the speed of 39 mph. The names come fromRather than cracking open a baby naming book, meteorologists turn to pre-set lists for storm names.
For Atlantic tropical storms, there are six lists of names. reused every six years. Each list contains 21 names, organized alphabetically, to name each storm in a year’s hurricane season. There will not be a"Hurricane Quinn" or"Hurricane Zoe" going down in the history books, however, as the letters Q, U, X, Y and Z are skipped, since they offer fewer name options compared to the rest of the alphabet.
There are separate lists for eastern north Pacific tropical storm names, which includes X, Y and Z names, unlike the Atlantic lists, but still omits Q and U. In a parallel system for the Atlantic, there are six lists of names, reused on a rotation.
