How did Daniel Jones and the Giants' offense succeed against the Vikings? jfmckessy breaks down how Jones helped lead the Giants to their first playoff win in more than a decade. NYGiants | TogetherBlue

Over the weekend, a quarterback for a team from New York became the first player in NFL history to pass for at least 300 yards, rush for 70 yards, and throw two touchdown passes. No, it wasn’t the Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen. It was New York GiantsGoing against what anyone thought possible at the beginning of this season, Jones just led the Giants to their first playoff win since their Super Bowl victory in February 2012.

To say Jones was the one who led his team to victory isn’t an understatement or an example of giving a quarterback too much credit. The Giants didn’t win thanks to their Pro Bowlers—running back Saquon Barkley and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence—or because of rookie ’s monster effort up front. They won because Jones stepped up and upped his status from “quarterback you can win with” to “quarterback you winSo how did it happen? How did Jones get to this point where he manages to win his first playoff game, throw for 301 yards and two touchdowns, and add 78 rushing yards on 17 attempts?

A massive key to Jones’ success on Sunday and all season was his ability and willingness to use his legs when he could. The Duke product has always been an athletic, mobile quarterback, but using his legs is not something we saw a lot of over his first three years in the NFL. Instead, he’d often hold onto the ball too long, panic when a play didn’t develop quickly, and either take sacks—which often led to fumbles—or make bad decisions and throw interceptions.

In the Giants’ previous matchup with the Vikings in Week 16, he recorded just four rushes for 34 yards. To add an extra twist for Minnesota’s defense to deal with, Daboll encouraged Jones to use his legs more on Sunday. Against a team with a struggling defense that only really had its pass-rush attack going for it this season, a major key for Jones and the Giants was avoiding sacks. The best way for the quarterback to do so was to not hold onto the ball for too long.
