Third graders at Newport read a total of 3.7 million minutes during the competition. Overall, Crosby ISD third graders read for 11 million minutes. According to the Read To The Final Four website, students combined for a record-setting 60 million minutes read, with 18,594 students, 954 classes, 189 schools and 11 school districts participating.“Our four campuses made the Elite Eight out of nearly 200 schools, which is phenomenal,” she said. “Plus, these kids competed with a positive attitude and many of them clicked and became readers for life.
Students were able to watch the Final Four teams as they did their workouts in preparation for the weekend games to decide the Men’s National Champion. They also won $2,000 in prize money for Newport Elementary and one Crosby third grade classroom at Barrett Elementary was named a top impact group and awarded free bikes.
The Final Four moves on to another city next year, but it’s not the end for inspiring students to read in Crosby ISD.
