Kohn did reveal some bright spots in the business. The company gained 4 million new Instagram followers in the last month, demonstrating sustained cultural cachet—though social media is difficult to monetize in a meaningful way.
He also noted that digital video subscriptions rose 30% in the last year, and that Playboy’s e-commerce division “serves almost 1 million active customers every month.” The company may offer some printed content in the future, like special editions and collections. Playboy was launched in 1953 by 27-year-old Hugh Hefner, wholeft his job as a copywriter at Esquire after he was denied a $5 raise.
Over time, Playboy became ubiquitous, and its most popular issues sold into the millions."Playboy is a personal image. What's important to me is our product," Hefner toldHefner took the company public that same year, before buying it out at a $207 million valuation in 2011 alongside other investors. The value of the firm is now likely far smaller.
