Craig Green loves a uniform, and he especially loves a uniform if it has been twisted and subverted—which is exactly what the talented young British designer has done with the clothing for the front-of-house staff at the Standard Hotel in London. It is the hotel group’s first international outpost, housed in a renovated Brutalist edifice slap-bang opposite St. Pancras train station. The designer had thought back to when he first stayed at the Standard in New York’s Meatpacking District.
That’s exactly what he has done with his uniform for the Standard London. It’s a ninja-style rendering of minimalist black suiting, with a classic unstructured worker’s jacket and straight-cut pants—“the most simplistic forms,” Green says—which deliver a jolt to the eye when the wearer turns around; you’re confronted with electric blue and bright red. “I love the idea of wearing color, but it’s hard to see myself in it—I get a bit scared,” Green says, laughing.
The bathrobes Green has designed take the same approach. Cut from cotton toweling, they come in very specific and nontraditional shades of mustard, brown, and dusky pink—who could ever look at white the same way again? The fabric’s herringbone or vertical striping mimics the linear quilting and surface patterns of his own collections. The robes also have belts and bands that allow them to be transformed, lending a playful sense of soft sculpture.
