Council on Thursday will decide what salary scale to use on the charter amendment they will place on the Nov. 5 ballot to increase its pay.
After weeks of debating how much is too much to be paid, the City Council on Thursday could approve a ballot proposition to raise their salary to $70,200. That’s less than what the Charter Review Commission suggested, but more than the salary Mayor Ron Nirenberg favored. “The extent of the responsibility for City Council , I think, is a great commitment of time, energy and thought process,” said District 9 Councilman John Courage during an Aug. 1 special meeting.
Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda, likely mayoral contender, makes late push for major charter changes The Charter Review Commission — which Nirenberg convened late last year to study council pay, among other changes — had recommended bumping up pay to $80,000. That figure is based on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics average median income estimates for people employed in “management and professional occupations” for the San Antonio-New Braunfels metropolitan area.
Will San Antonio City Council ask voters for a big pay raise? The city uses HUD income calculations and corresponding rent limits to set housing-related targets. For example, in the Strategic Housing Implementation Plan the council adopted a couple years ago, the city outlined specific numbers of rental and ownership units at various income levels that officials wanted to see built or preserved in the area.HUD figures are also used to determine eligibility for federally-subsidized housing.
