Nearly every candidate who has released tax returns has given away less than 5% of their income, by our count, often lagging average Americans in the same tax brackets 2020Money
Billionaire Tom Steyer is the biggest known donor in absolute terms. But of the candidates who have released their tax returns, Cory Booker has disclosed giving away the highest percentage of earnings. Hover over each photo for more information.
The rest of the candidates who have released tax returns gave significantly less. Elizabeth Warren and her husband have contributed about $420,000 to charity since 2008, roughly 4% of the $10 million they made over that timespan. Kamala Harris’ tax returns show some $200,000 of giving since 2014, around 2% of earnings. Bernie Sanders recently got into a scrape with, who pledged $100 million to New York University’s medical school in August 2018.
The youngest and poorest person in the 2020 field, Pete Buttigieg, also appears to be the least charitable in dollar terms. Mayor Pete, between 2009 to 2017, listed $8,668 in charitable donations over that span on his tax returns. But percentage-wise, two others did worse. Tim Ryan seems to have given just $12,000 to charity between 2009 and 2017, about 0.7% of his earnings. Beto O’Rourke donated a similar percentage from 2008 to 2017, according to his taxes—a total of $24,000 out of $3.
Then there’s Donald Trump. He gives his $400,000 annual presidential salary to government agencies but refuses to release his tax returns—making it difficult to pinpoint exactly how much he has donated in total. During his 2016 campaign, Trump released a list of 4,844 supposed charitable gifts from the previous five years.Meanwhile two foundations connected to the president, The Donald J. Trump Foundation and the Eric Trump Foundation, have faced investigations by New York’s attorney general.
