I'm an Australian science journalist based in Cali, Colombia covering STEM in The Global South. I'm the current Vice-President of the Colombian Association of Science Journalism (ACPC) and helped organize the 12th World Conference of Science Journalists, with 600+ attendees in Medellin, Colombia.

A marine biologist from Brazil is studying the microscopic zooxanthellae algae that live within coral to see to what extent it can help reefs bounce back from bleaching.since the 1980s, with an over half of the world's coral reefs estimated have died in the last 30 years.

Rocha de Souza explains that by understanding these complex interactions, researchers can better assess which symbionts are most effective in enhancing coral tolerance to heat and other stressors, laying the groundwork for targeted interventions to bolster coral resilience. Rocha de Souza would go on to earn her undergraduate degree in biology from the Universidade de Sao Paulo in Brazil, a master’s degree in oceanography with a specialization in marine biology from the Université Aix-Marseille in France and in 2022 was selected to spend a one-year fellowship program in Washington DC to work in marine policy at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

"Despite conducting relevant research, scientists from the Global South frequently face limited recognition due to the lack of access to world-renowned institutions, cutting-edge technology, and high publication costs," she says, adding that as a woman from Brazil, she's benefited from working in a developed country: with access to advanced facilities, funding, technology, and collaboration with renowned research groups.
